Our Selects program has proved to be one of the most successful avenues for young hockey players to improve their skills, compete at the highest level and further their playing careers while offering world-class experiences to the athletes and their families. Countless Selects alumni have gone on to accomplish great feats both on and off the ice, and with our new Selects Spotlight, we look to promote those players and their success stories.
A member of the ‘01 East Coast Selects-O and four-year player for the South Kent Selects Academy, decorated Selects alum Will Margel took the next step in his amateur hockey career when he verbally committed on October 15th to the University of New Hampshire.
Margel joined the Selects program in 2015, traveling to Europe for the U-14 World Selects Invitational. In nine tournament games, the Maryland native scored two goals and added an assist, helping ECS-O to a 7-2-0 record and a third place finish.
The following summer, he returned to ECS-O for the 2016 WSI in Philadelphia, where the squad won seven straight games before being eliminated in the semifinal game of the playoffs with Margel scoring a goal and four assists.
At the Selects Academy, Margel has been a major standout leading the U-15 team in scoring for the 2016-17 season with 95 points and currently leading the U-18 team in scoring with 30 points in 26 games for the 2018-19 season. Over the past three seasons at South Kent, Margel has appeared in 133 games, scoring 99 goals and 197 points during that stretch.
Now in his senior season, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound forward’s focus begins to shift toward the next level. Slated to join New Hampshire for the 2020-21 season, Margel certainly wants to finish his Selects career strong this season before focusing on juniors and ultimately, college hockey.
“Sidney Crosby is my biggest hockey influence,” he said. “He has been my favorite player forever and he’s the best for a reason. No matter how good he is, he’s constantly working on something. He has everything you need to be a winner.
After playing for the Wildcats, Margel hopes to one day make it to the NHL and join the growing list of Selects alums to reach the highest level of hockey.
