Our Selects program has proved to be one of the most successful avenues for young hockey players to improve their skills, compete at the highest level and further their playing careers while offering world-class experiences to the athletes and their families. Countless Selects alumni have gone on to accomplish great feats both on and off the ice, and with our new Selects Spotlight, we look to promote those players and their success stories.
Verbally committed to Clarkson University for the 2019-20 season, ‘01 West Coast Selects defenseman Lauren Bernard inches closer to her Golden Knights debut as she enters her final season of youth hockey in the fall.
After playing with the U-16 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite last season, Bernard is slated to join our Selects Academy at Bishop Kearney for the 2018-19 season and is expected to make an immediate impact on the defensive corps.
Having spent significant time in various phases of our Selects program, Bernard said there’s one moment in particular that stands out in her mind.
“Winning the Midwest Showcase with Manon Rheaume and Kendall Coyne as our coaches,” she said. “It was so much fun being able to learn from two players that have played at the highest level for women. They’re great role models.”
Rheaume — the first female to ever play in the NHL — and Coyne — a 2018 Olympic gold medalist with Team USA — provided Bernard with an invaluable experience while playing with Selects.
Still a year away from her college debut, Bernard is slated to join a Clarkson program that’s won the last two national titles in 2017 and 2018. With excitement mounting, Bernard still has some important decisions to make before officially enrolling.
“I’m not sure what I’m going to major in at Clarkson,” she said. “I really enjoy math and science so it will be something along those lines.”
Luckily, Bernard still has a year of school — and elite-level youth hockey — left before having to make some of these difficult life choices.
