Our Selects program has proved to be one of the most successful avenues for young hockey players to improve their skills, compete at the highest level and further their playing careers while offering world-class experiences to the athletes and their families. Countless Selects alumni have gone on to accomplish great feats both on and off the ice, and with our new Selects Spotlight, we look to promote those players and their success stories.
Alec Stewart has spent three years with our ‘03 ECS-O team, a group that took first place at this year’s U-15 World Selects Invitational in Philadelphia. There, Stewart was a member of a five-man defensive corps that allowed just 16 goals in nine tournament games, going 9-0-0 en route to a championship.
The shutdown right-hand shot defenseman said it’s been a total group effort in terms of developing his game on the ice.
“My parents got me in to hockey,” he said. “Shawn Zimmerman really developed [my game] before I joined triple-A hockey. Patrik Stefan and Chris Zarb also because I developed a ton from them.”
While organized hockey didn’t necessarily run in Stewart’s family, once his father — an avid pond hockey player — exposed Alec to the game at a young age, he fell in love with it.
At 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, Stewart spent last season with Little Caesars Bantam Major and plans on joining Honeybaked U-16 in the fall of 2018. With aspirations of playing college hockey, the Michigan native is eyeing a lot of Midwest schools to further his academic and athletic future.
“I’m interested in Michigan, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston College and Boston University,” he said. “I would like to major in business and entrepreneurship.”
