The Selects program has had a long track record of success advancing players into the highest leagues in the world. From the NHL to Major Junior, Selects alumni are among the leaders in various leagues across North America. Connor McDavid was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week after the former ‘96 East Coast Selects-O forward tallied three goals and nine points in four games. The Edmonton Oilers’ superstar is second in the league in scoring with 105 points in 69 games.
Two ‘99 Selects reached milestones in the OHL, as East Coast Selects-O alum Ben Jones became just the fourth player in Niagara Ice Dogs history to score 100 points in a single season. Former West Coast Selects forward Sasha Chmelevski scored his 100th career goal as well, doing so with a hat trick in the last game of the regular season.
The OHL Cup concluded on Monday, with the ‘03 Don Mills Flyers taking the title. The week-long tournament serves as a breeding ground for the next crop of CHL draft picks, where a plethora of Selects alumni were in action. Four former players — Francesco Arcuri, Ryan Forberg and Anson Thornton from the ‘03 East Coast Selects-O and Brandt Clarke from the ‘03 East Coast Selects-Q — contributed in part to the team’s championship run which was capped off by a 6-5 come-from-behind overtime win over the Toronto Red Wings in the finale. Don Mills went 7-0-0 during the tournament, outscoring its opponent 41-10 in that span.
