Chosen first overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 NHL Draft, Rasmus Dahlin was the first of Selects alum to hear his name called in Dallas over the weekend. After all 217 picks had been made Saturday afternoon, he’d be far from the only one, as a total of 43 former Selects players were chosen by NHL teams.

Dahlin became just the second defenseman taken first overall in the last 12 years, joining fellow Selects alum Aaron Ekblad who also went first overall in the 2014 draft. He would be followed by five other alums to go in the first round of the draft as Oliver Wahlstrom (‘00 East Coast Selects-Q, ‘00 Sweden Selects), Joel Farabee (‘00 East Coast Selects-O), Ryan Merkley (‘00 East Coast Selects-O), Isac Lundestrom (‘99 Sweden Selects) and Rasmus Sandin (‘00 Sweden Selects) were taken off the board on Friday.

A member of our ‘00 Sweden Selects that competed at the U-13 World Selects Invitational, Dahlin was one-of-seven players from that team to be drafted over the weekend. Former teammates Mathias Emilio Pettersen, Jonatan Berggren, Oscar Back, Axel Andersson Wahlstrom and Sandin were also drafted by NHL teams, making that U-13 WSI team from 2013 one of the more decorated Selects teams in recent memory.

Nearly all of our Selects teams saw at least one player chosen in the NHL Draft with ECS-O, ECS-Q, West Coast Selects, Western Canada, Finland Selects, Czech Selects and Slovakia Selects all being represented.

Of the 31 NHL teams, 26 drafted at least one Selects alum, none more ambitious than the Montreal Canadiens, who drafted four with Jacob Olofsson (‘00 Sweden Selects), Cameron Hillis (‘00 East Coast Selects-O), Jordan Harris (‘00 East Coast Selects-Q) and Cole Fonstad (‘00 Western Canada).

What began with just one Selects team has grown, improved and expanded to more than a dozen Selects programs representing various countries and regions around the world. With boys teams at several age groups from ‘03 to ‘07 across North America and Europe, our Selects program continues to provide world-class training, competition and experiences to aspiring youth hockey players.
